Potter County GOP Will Use Paper Ballots, Hand-Counting

[#TexasPolitics365]

Voters in Potter County will see changes at the polls during the March 1st primary. The Potter County Republican Party will administer their own election using all paper, hand-marked, hand-counted ballots.

This will be the first time since the early 2000s that Republican voters in the north Texas county will be using strictly paper ballots on election day. A choice Potter County GOP Chairman Dan Rogers said will lead to a more secure count.

[#TexasPolitics365]

County Commission Candidate Indicted For Misleading Campaign Texts

[#TexasPolitics365]

A grand jury in Collin County indicted a Plano man on suspicion of a misdemeanor violation of state election law, a spokesman from the Plano Police Department confirmed to the Plano Star Courier.

The indictment came as Plano police investigated a series of clandestine text messages purported to be from Plano City Council candidates.

Candidates named in the texts, including 2021 mayoral candidate Lily Bao, denied any involvement with the texts and contend that they were from an external source.

One of the text messages read, “Make Plano Great Again. Vote For Donald Trump Co-Chair Lily Bao for Mayor.”

Authorities connected the text messages to Plano resident John Stafford, who's served as the fundraising director for the Collin County Democratic Party and is running for Collin County Commissioner.

Huffines Attacks Abbott Over Ongoing Border Crisis

[#TexasPolitics365]

Continuing to attack Republican Governor Greg Abbott from the political Right, primary challenger Don Huffines launched a new video late last week blaming Abbott for a week response to the ongoing illegal immigration/border crisis.

The video, which was posted on Huffines' Facebook page on December 23, features Abbott speaking in what is labeled as "2015" (with no day or month included) and in more recent videos labeled "2021" using similar language about getting tough on the border.

The video later features text and a woman's voice, saying, "Since Abbott has been governor of Texas, the invasion of our borders has reached 2 million illegal aliens."

The video does not mention that in the past year, the Biden administration has rolled back many of president Trump's measures to fight border incursions. The Abbott campaign has not responded to the video.

In his own plan to protect the border, located on his campaign website, Huffines says that as governor, he would ignore the Federal courts if they rule against efforts to protect the state against the "invasion."

"Texas should begin the effort to stop the takeover of the Constitution by the courts by taking control of our borders–no matter what the federal courts say about it.

I don’t care how the courts rule; Texans must be kept safe. I will not ask the federal government for permission. I will do whatever it takes to permanently end the practice of illegal immigration into Texas."

Jan 6 Committee Investigating Rick Perry Text

[#TexasPolitics365]

Donald Trump's Energy Secretary Rick Perry was revealed on Friday to be the person who texted Mark Meadows with an 'aggressive' plan to have Republican-controlled state legislatures overturn Joe Biden's election victory.

CNN revealed Perry as the person behind the text, which was read publicly - but anonymously - on the House floor this week during the vote on holding Meadows in contemp of Congress.

A spokesman for the former Texas governor, however, denied it was Perry's number to the network. But CNN said that 'multiple people' who know Perry confirmed that the phone number the committee associated with that text message is Perry's number.

CNN revealed Perry as the person behind the text, which was read publicly - but anonymously - on the House floor during the vote on holding Meadows in contempt of Congress.

The Nov. 4, 2020, text was read on the House floor Tuesday night by Rep. Jamie Raskin: 'HERE's an AGRESSIVE (sic) STRATEGY: Why can t (sic) the states of GA NC PENN and other R controlled state houses declare this is BS (where conflicts and election not called that night) and just send their own electors to vote and have it go to the SCOTUS.'

The strategy is not unlike one pursued by the Republican party in 1876, in which three Southern states controlled by Republican legislatures sent disputed election results to Congress, causing a months-long national crisis.

Austin Ballot Will Have Pot Decriminalization Measure

[#TexasPolitics365]

Activists have turned in enough signatures to place a marijuana decriminalization initiative on Austin’s 2022 ballot.

Ground Game Texas, a progressive organization that was established earlier this year, submitted more than 30,000 signatures to qualify the local measure to go before voters in the May 7 election next year.

While Austin, as well as other Texas cities like Dallas, have already independently enacted law enforcement policy changes aimed at reducing arrests for cannabis-related offenses by issuing citations and summons, the Austin Freedom Act of 2021 would take the reform a step further.

Lt. Gov. Candidate Says Wikipedia Page Deletion Effort Is Part of Cancel Culture

[#TexasPolitics365]

Republican candidate for lieutenant governor Daniel Miller says a recently created Wikipedia entry on him is in danger of being deleted, and he blames cancel culture.

Just six hours after its creation by an unnamed Wikipedia editor, Miller, founder of the Texas Independence Movement, says his page, which includes biographical information on him, face to move to be deleted by other users.

"It took 25 years of service to Texas to finally get an entry on Wikipedia. It only took 6 hours for the cancel culture mafia to attempt to have the entry removed."

Wikipedia is notorious for stringent criteria for subjects of articles. If a person is deemed not notable, any over-zealous user could nominate it for deletion almost immediately upon its creation.

Miller took the move to delete his page as a sign that people are worried about his candidacy.

"While it’s frustrating to have to battle the mini-Stalins of the world merely for the right to be heard, it is the surest sign that we are winning."

Williamson County Commissioners Cave, Send Federal Aid To School Districts

[#TexasPolitics365]

Williamson County commissioners voted to distribute extra federal funds to the Round Rock and Leander school districts on Tuesday, despite a recent controversy over books in schools.

Last week, county commissioners decided they'd hold onto about $9 million in leftover CARES Act money, pending discussions with the school districts, which they said allow books with questionable sexual content in their schools.

But commissioners relented yesterday, sending the funds to the Leander and Round Rock school districts, with the stipulation that 11 books under review by the districts be removed.

Williamson County Denies School Districts Federal Funds Over Curriculum Concerns

[#TexasPolitics365]

The Williamson County Commissioners Court voted 4-1 to allocate additional federal coronavirus relief funds to school districts in the county except for Leander ISD and Round Rock ISD during its Dec. 14 meeting.

The districts in Williamson County, which is located just north of Austin, have been embroiled in controversy since this summer, when parents discovered books with explicit sexual content being assigned to students or available in libraries

LISD and RRISD were excluded from this round of funding—the second batch of funds from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economy Security Act the county has distributed to schools—over concerns commissioners voiced both about inappropriate books in school libraries, and critical race theory being part of the school curriculum.

Beto Attacks Abbott Over "#AbbottTax" Increases On utility Bills

[#TexasPolitics365]

Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke is calling out Gov. Greg Abbott once more - saying in a Twitter video that the governor is leaving taxpayers to foot the bill for fixing the state’s energy grid.

“Many of you are already seeing rising utility bills,” O’Rourke says. “In fact, the average Texas household, by the end of this winter, will see an increase in their utility bills of between $20 and $50 per month going forward.”

On Saturday morning, Texas Democrats had the hashtag #AbbottTax trending on Twitter for Texas users.

For Democrats, last year's failure of the electric grid in Texas following record low temperatures and a massive ice storm, remains one of the few wedge issues they hope to use to pry Abbott out of the governor's mansion next November.

Republicans have responded to attacks that "nothing" has been done to address the problems of the grid by pointing to a series of reforms to the electric grid and electric grid management past by the legislature in the past year.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Faces Re-Election Battle In 2022

[#TexasPolitics365]

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa is facing a competitive race to keep his position after the dismal performance of his party in 2020.

But Hinojosa, who has held the job since 2012 and has indicated he is not going anywhere. But that has not stopped early interest in the race, which will be determined by delegates to the state party's biennial convention next summer.

Kim Olson, the former candidate for agriculture commissioner and Congress, announced Sunday she is running to lead the party, saying the "promise of a Blue Texas has so far fallen short of expectations."

Meanwhile, Carroll G. Robinson, chair of the Texas Coalition of Black Democrats, is considering a campaign for the job and plans to make an announcement in January, among others are reportedly considering announcing a run in 2022.

Making light of the Democrat's recent electoral failures, Texas Republican Party vice chair Cat Parks tweeted a wry endorsement of her rival party's chairman: "Gilberto Hinojosa for Democrat Party Chair FOREVER 🎉💃 @texasdemocrats Vs. @TexasGOP #winning"

The post included a picture of the Albert Einstein quote, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

Texas Investigates Pharma Companies' Sale Of Puberty Blocking Drugs

[#TexasPolitics365]

The State Attorney General's office has announced an investigation into two pharmaceutical companies that allegedly promoted hormone-blocking drugs for children with gender dysphoria, even though the drugs have not been approved for this purpose.

One of the companies told media that it has not promoted the drugs for gender dysphoria.

"Puberty blockers used on minors experiencing gender dysphoria or similar mental disorders is child abuse," Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement Wednesday.

Attorney General's Opponents Hope To Capitalize On His Legal Troubles

[#TexasPolitics365]

With the candidate filing deadline behind them, the attorney general’s challengers are jockeying to establish themselves as the best person to unseat him.

Four years ago, Republicans watched closely to see if Attorney General Ken Paxton — who had been battling a high-profile securities fraud indictment — would draw a last-minute primary challenger as the candidate filing deadline loomed for the 2018 primary.

But despite his apparent vulnerability, Paxton ran unopposed in his party on his way to a second term.

This election cycle, things are different. Paxton is facing what is shaping up to be the biggest, most contentious fight among Texas Republicans next year.

He's attracted three primary foes who are well known in Texas politics. They are Land Commissioner George P. Bush, former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman and U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert of Tyler.

Despite the odds, Paxton is still polling well ahead of his closest challenger, Bush, who, himself, is vulnerable to accusations that he mishandled renovations at the Alamo in San Antonio.

Most controversially, Bush originally championed the removal of the Cenotaph memorial that some say sits atop the ashes of the martyred defenders who died on that site at the hands of Gen. Santa Ana's troops.

While he does take credit for that position on the Cenotaph, he says moves to reimagine the story of the Alamo - to tell the Mexicans side of the story within the facility - lies entirely with the San Antonio city council, and he says he never supported it.

Bush's problem with conservatives is is exacerbated by the entry of gomert into the race. The conservative congressman is well respected in Republican circles and is expected to take votes away from Bush and Paxton.

Rick Perry Files To Run For Governor (But He's Not The Former Governor)

[#TexasPolitics365]

He’s not the former governor, but Rick Perry is running for Texas governor.

Rick Lynn Perry, a computer engineer from Springtown, filed for a spot on the Republican primary ballot Monday, according to the Republican Party of Texas.

It was not immediately clear whether Perry has any political experience. KXAN reached out to a local attorney who bills himself as Perry’s campaign treasurer on Twitter but did not hear back right away.

If accepted by the Texas Secretary of State, Perry’s name will appear alongside those of incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott, and his two biggest opponents: former state senator Don Huffines, and former Texas Republican Party chair Allen West.

The Texas Tribune reports that Perry's campaign treasurer, Tony McDonald, an Austin lawyer, is a known supporter of Don Huffines, which raises the question of Perry's motive for running against Abbott.

Public Radio Host Diaz Joins Democratic Gubernatorial Primary Race

[#TexasPolitics365]

The Democratic primary for Texas governor gained another candidate Wednesday: former public radio journalist Joy Diaz.

Diaz released a video Tuesday explaining why she’s entering the race for the state’s top elected position, saying three issues are top of mind for her campaign. Those include the border, public education and state preparedness.

“Our current leadership has forgotten that their mission is to serve us,” she said in her video announcement.

Diaz will have to face long odds to win the primary, going up against already announced candidate former US Rep. and former US Senate and Presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke, who has excellent name recognition among the state's Democrats and is a gifted fundraiser.

West Condemns Abbott For Not Stopping National Guard Mandatory Vaccinations

[#TexasPolitics365]

Republican gubernatorial candidate Allen West is condemning Gov. Greg Abbott, whom he claims is refusing to act to prevent forced vaccinations of national guardsmen in Texas.

In a press release, West said that abbott, who is commander of the Texas National Guard, "is allowing vaccine mandates to take effect in June 2022. He is kowtowing to federal overreach and not standing up for liberties of Texans who have stood up to serve the Lone Star State."

West goes on to say that those soldiers who are not vaccinated will have their drill pay withheld, which he characterized as "another sick maneuver to force a vaccine on Texans who have the right to make their own medical decisions."

Dem Lt. Gov. Candidate Dowd Drops Out For "More Diverse" Field

[#TexasPolitics365]

Left-wing media pundit Matthew Dowd announced he would end his bid for Texas lieutenant governor so that a non-White, male Christian candidate can prevail.

"Important news. I am ending my campaign for Lt. Governor of Texas. Now that the race is emerging in a more diverse way, I have made the decisions from a place of integrity to step back," Dowd tweeted to accompany a press release.

The announcement came just days after he condemned Republicans for attacking the word "woke," saying it simply meant "human decency," and Jesus would call himself woke.

Also weighing on his decision may have been the fact that the State Democratic party chair Gilbert Hinojosa had endorsed lieutenant governor candidate Mike Collier several months ago and he was the only candidate in the race.

Approximately 9,900 of the 165,000 were arrested on criminal trespassing charges, including 2,200 in the Del Rio, Texas, region, where tens of thousands of Haitian migrants came across the border in September and created a makeshift camp under the international bridge.
