Former Democrat Candidate Defeated In a South Texas Border Election Mocks "Uneducated" Hispanic Voters

[#TexasPolitics365]

A former Democrat candidate had said that Hispanics are voting for Republicans like @CasandraLGarcia, @monica4congress, and @MayraFlores2022 because they're "uneducated."

That's a quote from former Democratic candidate Dan Sanchez, who was defeated by Republican Flores in a special election earlier this year in a South Texas District that is heavily Hispanic.

The quote, from an unattributed article posted on Twitter, had Sanchez quoted as saying that Flores, "was appealing to the Hispanic, uneducated voter because she was from Mexico. And she was quote-unquote, the American dream," said Sanchez.

Flores, in a Fox News interview said she believes voters chose her because “I’m one of them and I’m also standing up for our values. God, family, our community. That’s who we are in South Texas. We’re all about hard work.”

Abbott And O'Rourke Both Express Support For Gambling

[#TexasPolitics365]

With support from both sides of the political spectrum, there is a good chance that legalize gambling could be coming to Texas.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott and his Democratic opponent, Beto O’Rourke, are willing to talk about bringing limited gambling in Texas. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a Republican, and Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor Mike Collier have expressed reservations — though Collier’s team vowed the candidate would let bills move through the process if elected. Any expansion of gambling would have to go to voters for approval as a constitutional amendment.

Election Is Over For Unopposed Candidates

[#TexasPolitics365]

The election is already over — before a single vote was cast — for a third of the Legislature and several hundred candidates for judge, district attorney, county commissioner and justice of the peace, among other positions up for election.

Due to a new state law, Texas Secretary of State John Scott issued a letter Sept. 8 saying that officials listed in an appendix, including 10 candidates for state Senate and 58 candidates for the Texas House, “are hereby declared elected” because they do not have an opponent.

Democrat Land Commissioner Candidate Kleberg Ouraises Republican Buckingham

[#TexasPolitics365]

While no Texas Democrat has won statewide office since 1994, Texas Land commissioner candidate Jay Kleberg had nearly 1.5 times as much campaign cash on hand than his Republican opponent, Dawn Buckingham at the end of September, according to the latest campaign finance reports filed Tuesday. He had more than $860,000 in his campaign coffers, compared to her $600,000.

But Kleberg admits he’s facing an uphill battle in a state where Republicans control all statewide offices and both legislative chambers. The land commissioner's office is an open seat this year, because the incumbent, George P. Bush, ran for attorney general, but lost in the primary against the incumbent, Ken Paxton in March.

AG Challenger Garza Hopes To Ride Abortion Issue Into Office

[#TexasPolitics365]

Well before jumping into the Texas attorney general's race, Democrat Rochelle Garza beat back a Trump administration attempt to stop a detained immigrant teenager from getting an abortion.

Incumbent Attorney General Ken Paxton backed the administration in that 2017 case, warning in a brief that "Texas must not become a sanctuary state for abortions." But Garza, an immigration lawyer, won in the appeals court and the teenager got the abortion.

Democrats like Garza hope to ride the abortion issue into office in November on a wave of feminist anger over the overturn of  Roe v. Wade.

State Board of Education Fight Symbolizes Divisions

[#TexasPolitics365]

A North Texas battle for a seat on the State Board of Education — which sets the pace for what millions of children learn — is reflecting the broad fight over the direction of the Republican and Democratic Parties and the divisions they represent in society as a whole.

Tracy Fisher is a lifelong Republican turned off by the culture war rhetoric used by conservative party leaders. She’s now running as a Democrat in the District 14 race, touting her experience as a veteran school board trustee and former public school parent.

The Republican nominee, Evelyn Brooks, is backing a party platform that decries critical race theory and explicit sex education for even the youngest children.

Republicans Field record Number of Blacks, Hispanics

[#TexasPolitics365]

Republicans are fielding a more racially diverse array of candidates in the midterms, hoping to make gains among voters of color and counter criticism their party appeals only to White people.

Thirty Hispanic and 24 Black Republicans are on ballots for House races, part of an even larger group of nearly 200 Black and Latino Republicans who ran in primaries — both record figures, according to the National Republican Congressional Committee. Another five Black or Hispanic GOP candidates are running for Senate seats.
