Legislators Ban Sex Changes For Minors

[#TexasPolitics365]

Texas lawmakers this week gave final approval for a bill that would ban gender procedures and therapies for minors, which now heads to the governor's desk.

The state Senate voted 19-12 to accept the House version of Senate Bill 14 with a majority of Republican support. The bill now heads to Gov. Greg Abbott's desk, The Texas Tribune reported.

Many media outlets decried the bill in headlines as "anti trans legislation" and a ban on "gender affirming care" for minors, language that obscures the true intention of the powerful hormones being prescribed to children, which is to "transition" them to another gender by halting their natural development.

No legislation in Texas or in other states that have banned the procedure for children have banned them for adults.

Lt.Gov Sees Agenda Slowed, Watered Down In House

[#TexasPolitics365]

With less than two weeks left in the legislative session, the Texas House has started moving on some of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick's more conservative priorities in the Senate, such as proposals targeting drag shows for children and college professor tenure.

But the lower chamber is putting its own tweaks on the bills, watering them down in some cases and leaving it unclear whether the powerful Patrick will go along — if the bills even make it out of the House. The situation is adding even more uncertainty to the home stretch of a regular session that has already been fraught with threats of overtime lawmaking.

Texas House Bill Would Penalize Venues That Host Kiddie Drag Shows

[#TexasPolitics365]

When is a man wearing a dress inherently sexual, and when is it frivolous fun? If you ask Rep. Nate Schatzline, R-Fort Worth, about the time he wore a dress for a school theater project, it was just a joke. But when it comes to other men performing in dresses in bars, that’s sexual.

At least according to a law he’s proposing that would classify places that host drag shows as “sexually oriented businesses,” which comes with additional taxes and licensing restrictions.

House Bill 1266 was assigned to the House State Affairs Committee on Friday, two days after a video of Schatzline wearing a dress surfaced. The video shows the lawmaker frolicking in a black dress along with classmates during his school days.

Texas Senate Debates Minor Gender Surgery Bans

[#TexasPolitics365]

In a marathon hearing that lasted late into the evening, a Texas Senate committee debated several bills to ban medical procedures for allegedly transgender minors and penalize doctors who provide it.

Senate Bill 14, the first to be heard, would bar doctors from providing a number of treatments for gender dysphoria to those under 18, including puberty blockers, hormone therapy and surgical interventions, commonly referred to as “gender affirming care.” It would also require the state medical board to revoke the license of physicians who provide this care, and bar taxpayer money to entities or individuals that facilitate or provide these treatments to minors.

Diapers, Tampons Wouldn't Be Taxed Under Austin Democrat's Bill

[#TexasPolitics365]

At Texas grocery stores, basic food products and several medications are not taxed.

The sales tax exemptions would be expanded to include baby and menstrual products by a bill filed Thursday by state Rep. Donna Howard (D-Austin).

The idea has begun to take hold in Europe. Last September, a 2020 law excepting diapers and menstrual products from taxes came into effect in Scotland.

Texas Supreme Court Rules Against Dad Seeking To Prevent Transitioning Of Son In California

Legislation Would Protect Children From Sexual Drag Shows

[#TexasPolitics365]

Republican Texas Representative Bryan Slaton is working on a law that would prevent children from seeing drag shows, saying they are too sexually explicit for them.

Slaton defended himself against critics who said he and other lawmakers should be focused on gun control.

"Every day is the right day to protect children, whether it’s from violence, or it’s from sexualization, someone taking advantage of them. I mean, it’s always the right time to protect children,” Slaton said.

[#TexasPolitics365]

Saying he is "Done with Disney, Let. Governor Dan Patrick said in a campaign email he would support legislation similar to the one past in Florida that prevents the teaching of overt sexual contact in the very early grades of elementary school.

"At first, I was angry at their over-the-top radical resistance to a Florida law that simply says schools cannot sexualize children in elementary school. I will make this law a top priority in the next session."

He went on, laying into the company, whose stock he has recently sold.

"Parents trusted the Disney brand, all while Disney was undermining parents who believed Disney was a quality and good company."

O'Rourke Calls Abbott "Authoritarian" With "Fixation On Trans Kids"

[#TexasPolitics365]

Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O'Rourke characterized incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott as an 'authoritarian thug' with his 'own oligarch[s] here in the state of Texas' within the gas industry, at Saturday's SXSW music and media event in Austin.

During an hour-long interview, O'Rourke also accused the longtime Texas governor of overlooking sex-trafficked children in his state in favor of his 'crazed fixation' on transgender children.

It was one of many attacks the failed former presidential candidate unleashed on Abbott. He also accused him of incompetence during last year's ice storm.
