Challenger Releases TV Ad Against "RINO" Gonzales

[#TexasPolitics365]

Roughly four months after the November midterms, Election Day 2024 is still pretty far off. But one Republican political hopeful is already brandishing her big guns and taking aim at the congressman in Texas’ 23rd District.

On Thursday, small business owner and “accomplished health industry leader” Julie Clark announced in a press release the unveiling of what her campaign is calling the district's first TV ad of next year’s election cycle.

Gonzales was recently censured by the Republican Party of Texas for his support for liberal gun control legislation and his vocal opposition to Republican border security plans.

Democrat Talking Points on Immigration "Lies From Pit Of Hell" Says Congressional Candidate

[#TexasPolitics365]

Speaking on Fox News, Irene Armendariz-Jackson – who is running to represent El Paso in Congress – torched the narrative from Democrats that cracking down on illegal immigration is anti-Hispanic.

"That is a lie from the pit of hell and that's exactly where it belongs. If the Democrats really cared about the Hispanic population in the United States, they would actually control the border and bring border security," she told Brian Kilmeade.

Accusation: South Texas Democrat "hiding Radical Views" From Voters

[#TexasPolitics365]

South Texas Democrat Michelle Vallejo said she's misleading voters about the  nature of her policy positions after a Washington Free Beacon report revealed the congressional hopeful deleted her progressive platform from her campaign site.

After winning a bitter primary fight as an unabashed liberal, Vallejo scrubbed from her campaign site all evidence of her support for a slew of progressive policies—including Medicare for All, student debt cancellation, and a federal jobs guarantee—the Free Beacon reported Wednesday. Just days later, Vallejo said she still supports those policies, she just doesn't want voters to know: Her campaign told the Wall Street Journal Vallejo continues to back student loan forgiveness and Medicare for All but changed her site to "better reflect how the candidate is talking to voters."

Both Congressional Candidates Face Challenges In South Texas Race

[#TexasPolitics365]

In Texas’ most competitive congressional race this November, conventional wisdom would suggest that the candidates make their way toward the middle.

Democrats face the  challenge of running a far left candidate, Michelle Vallejo, in the newly drawn South Texas district that would have voted for former President Donald Trump by 2.8 percentage points in 2020, and massive infusions of cash from national Republicans hoping to tap into the area’s economic concerns amid record inflation. Meanwhile, Republicans will be pitching a conservative Hispanic Republican woman, Monica De La Cruz, in a Hispanic-majority region that has delivered Democrats victories for decades.

Democrat Congressional Candidate Left $200k Off Disclosure Form

[#TexasPolitics365]

Michelle Vallejo, a Democrat running for the open Congressional seat in Texas’ 15th District, left more than $200,000 in assets off of her financial disclosure report, a form on which she was required to certify the contents were “true, complete and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief.”

In February, Vallejo filed an initial financial disclosure report for the year 2021 with one asset in San Luis, Colorado, valued between $15,000-$50,000. She also listed earned income of just under $40,000 from Pulga Los Portales, a family business, and $3,000 she made consulting for a company called Trucha.

AOC-Backed Congressional Candidate Loses Recount

[#TexasPolitics365]

In a blow to left-leaning Democrats, Texas congressional candidate Jessica Cisneros — who was endorsed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. — has lost in a recount for her party's nomination.

Moderate incumbent Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, faced Justice Democrats-endorsed Cisneros in a tight runoff election that was too close to call for weeks, leading to a recount request from Cisneros, which concluded Tuesday that Cuellar not only won, but had a few more votes than initially reported.

Republican Mayra Flores Flips House District Red in Special Election

[#TexasPolitics365]

Republican Mayra Flores is projected to win a special election in Texas' 34th Congressional District, flipping a House seat after Rep. Filemon Vela, who held the seat for nearly 10 years, resigned in March and vacated the seat.

Flores, who had 51% of the vote to Democratic candidate Dan Sanchez' 43% when The Associated Press called the race, will become the first Mexican-born congresswoman to serve in the House. Her family moved to the United States when she was 6 years old.

Flores will finish out the remainder of Vela's term, which expires in January, and Republicans were eager to win the seat and gain new ground in the Lone Star state to represent the district that spans east of San Antonio with parts along the coast to Brownsville. As currently drawn, the 34th Congressional District will essentially be dissolved later this year after a newly redrawn map favoring current 15th Congressional District Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, the Democratic nominee for November's general election to represent the 34th District, was constructed.

Dem. National Campaign Committee Buying Ads For Pro-Life Democrat In Spacial Election

[#TexasPolitics365]

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), despite its overwhelming support for abortion, is forking out thousands of dollars in an ad partnership with Dan Sanchez, a pro-life Democrat running to represent Texas' 34th Congressional District in a special election this month.

The $100,000 coordinated purchase from the DCCC was announced this weekend and ads began airing on Saturday, according to Patrick Svitek of the Texas Tribune.

Sanchez says he has been a pro-life Catholic since he was a child.

Republican Leading In Special US House Election

[#TexasPolitics365]

House Republicans might not have to wait until November to chip away at Democrats’ majority.

Internal party polling conducted this month shows the GOP has a real shot at flipping former Democratic Rep. Filemon Vela’s South Texas seat in the upcoming June special election. Republican Mayra Flores led Democrat Dan Sanchez by 5 points in a late April survey — and President Joe Biden’s job approval was underwater by 14 points in a district he carried by 4 points in 2020.

Border Congressman Retires Early To Take Lobbying Job

[#TexasPolitics365]

As expected, Texas Democrat U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela Jr., retired Thursday night from Congress early, which will prompt a special election for his heated seat representing the South Texas border.

U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, a Democrat from Texas who currently represents the neighboring congressional district, is running for Vela’s seat in November.

Republican nominee Mayra Flores was upset about the early retirement during a time of economic and security crisis on the South Texas border.

“Filemon Vela is abandoning us while we have a crisis on our border and families can’t afford groceries and gas because prices are so high," she said.

The family of Botham Jean, the Dallas man slain by an off-duty police officer in 2018, has asked congressional candidate Jasmine Crockett to stop using his name for political gain.

“Botham’s name is not an endorsement you can parade, and his legacy is not a sound bite you can use to garner media coverage,” the family wrote in an open letter. “As a result, we have requested our family’s legal team to issue a cease-and-desist letter.”

Texas Supreme Court Hears Redistricting Bias Case

Texas Supreme Court justices have heard arguments a challenge to Congressional maps drawn up after the 2020 U.S. Census.

The Mexican American Legislative Caucus mounted the legal challenge claiming state lawmakers diluted the vote of communities of color despite those communities accounting for the state's population growth, which in turn resulted in Texas gaining two congressional districts.
