Texan Prospective Committee Chairs Urge Colleagues To Get on With House Session

Texans are slated to chair some of the most influential committees in this congressional session. But without a speaker of the House, they can’t take their gavels. And it’s getting on their nerves.

“Everything flows from the speaker being elected. We can’t even get sworn in. I can’t start my committee. We’re held hostage until we get this thing resolved,” said Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Austin, who is slated to lead the House Foreign Affairs Committee and lead the party’s investigations into the Biden administration’s botched withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Crenshaw Calls Anti-McCarthy Holdouts "Childish"

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) on Tuesday dismissed the idea that a group of hard-line conservatives had a viable alternative to Speaker-hopeful Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) waiting in the wings, instead saying the lawmakers are only opposing McCarthy to gain notoriety.

“This is such a childish attempt at gaining more and more attention,” Crenshaw said on Fox News ahead of the Speaker vote on Tuesday.

Some of McCarthy’s opponents have teased this week that they have a hidden alternative candidate to McCarthy that they say will become apparent after the first vote for Speaker on Tuesday. Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) suggested on Fox News on Monday that the group had refrained from publicly naming the alternative candidate to shield them from “attacks and retaliation.”

But Crenshaw said the far-right lawmakers were floating the idea of a McCarthy alternative just to continue to garner media attention.

“They keep acting like they’ve got somebody in the wings — they’re just waiting,” Crenshaw said. “They’re like children … you know why they say it like that? Because they want you to interview them again.”

Crenshaw Says FBI Raid "Automatically Political"

Congressman Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) said on Sunday that the FBI’s search of former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence was “automatically political.” 

On CNN’s “State of the Union,” moderator Jake Tapper asked Crenshaw “if law enforcement is innocent until proven guilty,” referring to the skepticism that the agency has faced for executing a search warrant at the Florida estate.

Rep. Crenshaw Tweets Insult at Activist After Verbal Spat At Convention

Rep. Dan Crenshaw hit back at a far-right activist who confronted him at the state GOP convention in Houston this past weekend.

"This is what happens when angry little boys like [Alex Stein] don't grow up and can't get girlfriends…," the congressman tweeted.

Social media activist Alex Stein had shared a video on Twitter of himself confronting the Republican congressman and his staff while calling him a "globalist RINO."

Far-right activists within the Republican Party are attacking Crenshaw and other Republicans for supporting aid to Ukraine, which has been invaded and it's people are being brutalized by Russian troops.

Crenshaw Seems To Question Reality Of Jesus During Podcast

A March, 2020 podcast is coming back to haunt congressman Dan Crenshaw because of a question a young woman asked about it during a recent fundraiser.

During the podcast with John Gretton “Jocko” Willink, a fellow former Navy SEAL and officer, Crenshaw was asked about philosophy and fiction and began discussing hero archetypes in stories.

“The important thing is that we have societal hero archetypes that we look up to. Jesus is a hero archetype. Superman is a hero archetype. Real characters, too, I could name a thousand. Rosa Parks, Ronald Reagan…” he said. 

A young woman (seriously identified as a 10 year old or an 18 year old on Twitter) asked Crenshaw about the quote during a fundraiser, according to a widely distributed video on Twitter. She added after quoting what he said, "I can't wrap my head around this."

Crenshaw answered, "Well, I'll help you. Put a period after Jesus and don't question my faith." He went on to say that in no part of that quote did he say that Jesus wasn't real.

Crenshaw, Roy, McCaul Condemn Trump, Oppose Impeachment

Texas Republican Congressmen Dan Crenshaw and Chip Roy released a statement Wednesday condemning President Trump's behavior leading up to the Capitol riot last Wednesday, but opposing the Democrats' move to impeach him in the House during the last days of his administration.

Crenshaw tweeted:

"We can’t ignore the President’s behavior leading up to the violence in the Capitol last week. He bears enormous responsibility for it. But impeachment is not the answer. We all need to deescalate, lower the temperature, and move forward together as a country."

He also posted a graphic of a larger statement, signed by him, Chip Roy, and two other Republican congressmen, Nancy Mace of South Carolina and John Curtis of Utah, condemning the president's actions on the day of the riot, but calling on Congress not to impeach the president.

The statement is likely to please no one, antagonizing Republican voters at home, while not appeasing Democrats in the House, seeking vengeance on the president and all Republicans for the events of January 6.

Houston area congressman Mike McCaul released a similar statement Wednesday that also condemned the president but stop short of supporting impeachment.

"I strongly condemn the president's rhetoric and his behavior," said McCaul, admitting that, "there very well may have been impeached offenses committed leading up to, and on, that tragic day."

As a threat of impeachment loomed large over the president Wednesday, Trump issued a statement condemning violence.

He called on Americans to “ease tensions and calm tempers."

“In light of reports of more demonstrations, I urge that there must be NO violence, NO lawbreaking and NO vandalism of any kind,” Trump said. “That is not what I stand for, and it is not what America stands for.”
