Gonzales Defiant After Censure For Liberal Votes

The Texas Republican Party censured U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales of San Antonio this weekend for his party-splitting votes, and the two-term congressman has some words for the group.

In Spanish, Gonzales delivered his most forceful response to the censure yet via Twitter. Using Mexican slang, the congressman basically told the party to buzz off, and he called the vote "puro pedo" — total crap/bullshit.

Rep. Gonzales Faces GOP Censure Over Left-leaning Votes

U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-San Antonio, is digging in as he faces a potential censure by the Republican Party of Texas over his recent positions breaking with the party.

The party’s executive committee is set to hold a quarterly meeting Saturday, where it will consider a censure resolution that cites a few of the notable ways in which Gonzales has split from his party in recent months. Those include his very public repudiation of a border security proposal by his fellow Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy, and his support of a bill defending same-sex marriage protections and a gun law that passed in response to the Uvalde school shooting in his district.

Harrison Co. GOP Rep. Censured By Local Party; Speaker Defends

The Harrison County Republican Party’s executive committee recently voted, 9-1, to censure State Rep. Chris Paddie (R-Marshall).

Local party chair Lee Lester said the vote was spurred by Paddie’s seemingly lack of support to the party’s platform.

“He was censured in Harrison County,” said Lester. “We were kind of waiting to see if he did anything in this legislative session. We were hoping that he would and we wouldn’t have to do anything, but he’s still not representing the people who sent him.

“We’re in a representative republic, and he doesn’t represent us, so we have to do something,” said Lester.

The local party chair said Paddie has been invited to their meetings several times to entertain questions about his representation of House District 9, to no avail.

“He has not even responded to our request,” said Lester.

Paddie responded on Twitter to the censure:

"When someone claims “We’re in a representative republic, and he doesn’t represent us, so we have to do something”, is the “us” that matters a handful of local party people or the nearly 80% of Republican voters in Harrison Co who continue to vote for me? What a joke."

House Speaker Dade Phelan also stood up for Paddie on Twitter:

"This is absurd. HD-9 knows and all of Texas deserves to know that @chrispaddie represents true Texas conservative values and votes his district every single day in the #txlege."
