Republican officials from 16 counties, including the heads of the Travis and Williamson county parties, pressed Tuesday for the immediate removal of Allen West as chairman of the state GOP.
They argue that under the party's bylaws, West — who announced that he is running for governor on Sunday — cannot serve as party leader while seeking statewide office. West announced his resignation last month but said it would be effective this coming Sunday, when his replacement will be chosen.
