East Texas State representative James A. White announced his campaign for Agriculture Commissioner Wednesday.
White, chairman of the House Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee, has served in the lower chamber since 2011.
His campaign website boasts of The US Army veteran's conservative credentials. It states:
"As our next Agriculture Commissioner, you can trust he will fight back against the far-left extremists to ensure Texas continues to lead the nation and provide the food, fiber, and fuel America relies on!"
The Hillister Republican will face incumbent Ag Secretary Sid Miller, who unexpectedly announced his re-election campaign last week. Miller has spent a good deal of time attacking incumbent Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, and was widely expected to challenge Abbott in the primary next year.
Miller has positioned himself as a far-right supporter of Donald Trump. White, who has served in the state legislature since 2011, was an early supporter of Trump, serving as an advisory board member for Black Voices for Trump.
