Abbott Blames Biden Border Policies For San Antonio Truck Tragedy

[#TexasPolitics365]

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said that the Biden administration’s illegal immigration policies are to blame, in part, after dozens of people were found dead inside a truck near San Antonio.

Hours after 50 bodies were found inside the back of an 18-wheeler truck on Monday, the Republican governor issued a Twitter post, saying, “These deaths are on [President Joe] Biden.”

“They are a result of his deadly open border policies,” Abbott wrote on the social media platform. “They show the deadly consequences of his refusal to enforce the law.”

Republicans Celebrate End Of Roe v Wade, Democrats Vow To Fight On

[#TexasPolitics365]

Texas Republican leaders celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade on Friday as Democrats vowed to fight back at the ballot box.

The landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision returned the issue of abortion access to the states, and due to a “trigger law” in Texas, the state will ban all abortions from the moment of fertilizations starting 30 days from the court’s issuance of a judgment, which typically comes about a month or so after the opinion.

Republican Convention Calls For Secession Referendum

[#TexasPolitics365]

The demand for Texans to be allowed to vote on the issue of whether the state should succeed from the Union was one of many measures adopted in the Texas GOP's party platform following last week's state convention in Houston.

Under a section titled "State Sovereignty," the platform states: "Pursuant to Article 1, Section 1, of the Texas Constitution, the federal government has impaired our right of local self-government. Therefore, federally mandated legislation that infringes upon the 10th Amendment rights of Texas should be ignored, opposed, refused, and nullified.

Texas retains the right to secede from the United States, and the Texas Legislature should be called upon to pass a referendum consistent thereto."

The vote comes the same week that national media and Democrats in Washington sought to portray Republicans as insurrectionists and traitors to the country for allegedly masterminding a plot to overthrow the government on January 6th, 2021. The platform plank will add fuel to that fire and give some Democrats in Texas a potent issue on which to run in this year's election.

At least two candidates for Governor in the Republican primary earlier this year supported a secessionist movement called "Texit" which is dedicating to holding a referendum on secession.

AOC-Backed Congressional Candidate Loses Recount

[#TexasPolitics365]

In a blow to left-leaning Democrats, Texas congressional candidate Jessica Cisneros — who was endorsed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. — has lost in a recount for her party's nomination.

Moderate incumbent Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, faced Justice Democrats-endorsed Cisneros in a tight runoff election that was too close to call for weeks, leading to a recount request from Cisneros, which concluded Tuesday that Cuellar not only won, but had a few more votes than initially reported.

GOP Convention Rejects 2020 Election Results

[#TexasPolitics365]

The Texas Republican Party voted over the weekend to pass a resolution saying President Joe Biden's 2020 election victory was illegitimate and called on fellow Republicans "to ensure election integrity" during the midterm races in November.

"We reject the certified results of the 2020 Presidential election," a statement released on Monday by the Texas GOP said, calling Biden an "acting President" who was "not legitimately elected by the people of the United States."

Gay Republicans Again Denied Booth At State Party Convention; Labelled "Abnormal"

[#TexasPolitics365]

An organization representing gay Republicans was once again denied permission to set up a booth at the Texas Republican Party Convention in Houston.

The Fort Worth Log Cabin Republicans is a new chapter of a national organization. The local group and the organization’s state affiliate were denied booths at the event that drew Republicans from across the state, a spokesperson for the party confirmed.

“I know that we need change in Texas party leadership, and there’s a small group of very loud people that are running this, but we will come back in two years and continue to fight forward,” said Jason Baldwin, president of the Log Cabin Republicans of Fort Worth,

Newly reelected State Party Chairman Matt Rinaldi cast the deciding vote that denied the group permission to set up a table. He said he was casting his vote on behalf of a delegate who had died.

The table denial wasn't the only slight suffered by gay Republicans at the convention. Delegates later approved a platform plank revision calling homosexuality an "abnormal lifestyle choice."

Rep. Dan Crenshaw hit back at a far-right activist who confronted him at the state GOP convention in Houston this past weekend.

"This is what happens when angry little boys like [Alex Stein] don't grow up and can't get girlfriends…," the congressman tweeted.

Social media activist Alex Stein had shared a video on Twitter of himself confronting the Republican congressman and his staff while calling him a "globalist RINO."

Far-right activists within the Republican Party are attacking Crenshaw and other Republicans for supporting aid to Ukraine, which has been invaded and it's people are being brutalized by Russian troops.

Republican Mayra Flores Flips House District Red in Special Election

[#TexasPolitics365]

Republican Mayra Flores is projected to win a special election in Texas' 34th Congressional District, flipping a House seat after Rep. Filemon Vela, who held the seat for nearly 10 years, resigned in March and vacated the seat.

Flores, who had 51% of the vote to Democratic candidate Dan Sanchez' 43% when The Associated Press called the race, will become the first Mexican-born congresswoman to serve in the House. Her family moved to the United States when she was 6 years old.

Flores will finish out the remainder of Vela's term, which expires in January, and Republicans were eager to win the seat and gain new ground in the Lone Star state to represent the district that spans east of San Antonio with parts along the coast to Brownsville. As currently drawn, the 34th Congressional District will essentially be dissolved later this year after a newly redrawn map favoring current 15th Congressional District Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, the Democratic nominee for November's general election to represent the 34th District, was constructed.

Abbott's Former Opponent To Host Rival Event During Convention

[#TexasPolitics365]

As the Republican Party of Texas prepares for it's state convention in Houston this week, they're preparing for something of a duel, as well.

Former candidate for governor Don Huffines is hosting a party in the city, like many other individuals and groups. But he's provocatively holding it at the same time as one being held by Gov. Greg Abbott.

The June 16th events, Abbott's at 5:30 pm, and Huffines' at 4 pm, are in separate locations, and neither of them are officially sanctioned party events, the governor's event being billed as a convention welcome reception, hosted by Texans for Greg Abbott, and the former senators event is billed as the launch of the Huffines Liberty Foundation.

Those familiar with the events say that Abbott's event has been planned for several weeks, with the date and time widely known.

Abbott handily defeated Huffiness in a March 1 primary, drawing 66% of the vote, while opponents Allen West and Huffines garnering around 12% each in the eight-way race.

Miller said he is “prepared to take the appropriate measures to prevent the politicization of feeding Texas school children.”

Media reports have stated that the Biden Administration may withhold federal funds for school meals from school districts that do not conform to federal policy regarding gender identity, use of girls’ restrooms and locker rooms by biological males and allowing biological males to compete in female sports and athletics.

In a letter sent to Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm , the northwest Texas Republican said the Department of Energy “lacks a clear plan to protect our critical infrastructure systems from nefarious actors, like Russia, and ensure peak power demand can be sufficiently met.”

Slaton defended himself against critics who said he and other lawmakers should be focused on gun control.

"Every day is the right day to protect children, whether it’s from violence, or it’s from sexualization, someone taking advantage of them. I mean, it’s always the right time to protect children,” Slaton said.

Beto Using Uvalde to Jump Start His Campaign

[#TexasPolitics365]

Democratic Texas governor’s race candidate Beto O’Rourke is hoping to use the Uvalde school shooting to reset the contest in America’s largest red state, a contest polls show him trailing incumbent Greg Abbott by several points.

Last week, following the massacre of 19 elementary school students and two teachers by an 18-year-old man with an AR-15-style rifle in Uvalde, Texas, O'Rourke briefly seized the national political spotlight by crashing the news conference of the man he wants to unseat, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, and declaring — in a moment subsequently viewed widely online — that the carnage was "on you.”

AG Paxton Launches Investigation Into Twitter "Bots"

[#TexasPolitics365]

Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched an investigation against Twitter for potentially false reporting over its fake bot accounts in violation of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

On Twitter, “bots” are automated, non-human accounts that can do virtually the same things as real people: send tweets, follow other users, and like and retweet others’ posts. Spam accounts like these inflate followers and reach, and often push deceptive and annoying activity. Bot accounts can not only reduce the quality of users’ experience on the platform but may also inflate the value of the company and the costs of doing business with it, thus directly harming Texas consumers and businesses.

The alleged number of bots on Twitter has recently scuttled, at least temporarily, Elon Musk's plans to buy the social media platform.

House Speaker Launches Independent Probe Of Evalde Shooting

“The fact we still do not have an accurate picture of what exactly happened in Uvalde is an outrage,” Phelan said in a news release.

On May 24, a gunman entered Robb Elementary in Uvalde and killed 19 children and two teachers. It was the country’s worst school shooting since the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut.

Media Tout Donor Letter As Proof Of GOP Revolt Over Guns

[#TexasPolitics365]

Mass media is touting the fact that several Republican donors, including some that have contributed to Gov. Greg Abbott’s campaigns, joined other conservative Texans in signing an open letter supporting congressional action to increase gun restrictions in response to the mass shooting in Uvalde that left 19 children and two teachers dead last week.

Those gun restrictions allegedly include red flag laws and extensive background checks, both of which are opposed by a majority of conservative voters in Texas.

These are among the proposals of US senator John Cornyn, who has won the praise of President Biden for being a "reasonable Republican" on the gun issue by proposing gun control legislation.

Progressives Angered Over US House Leaders' Support of "Moderate" Cuellar In Runoff Election

[#TexasPolitics365]

Texas election officials have still not declared a winner in the state’s 28th congressional district, where incumbent Democratic congressman Henry Cuellar leads progressive lawyer Jessica Cisneros by 175 votes out of roughly 45,000 ballots cast.

But as progressives wait to see who will win the runoff race, they cannot help but think of what might have been if House Democratic leaders had not come to Cuellar’s assistance. Cuellar secured the endorsements of the top three House Democrats, and the congressman’s campaign was also propped up by millions of dollars in super Pac spending aimed at attacking Cisneros.
