All 18 Republicans in the state Senate have signed on as co-authors to legislation condemning Texas place names containing the word "Negro," rejecting a Republican Party of Texas official who urged opposition to the resolution.

They joined all 13 Democrats in supporting Senate Concurrent Resolution 29, which says the racially offensive language is "a stain on the Lone Star State" and calls for the names to be changed to reflect and honor the diversity of Texas.
A member of the Texas Republican Party's executive committee, speaking for the party, urged defeat of the resolution during a committee hearing Monday.
